I think the reason this isn't talked about a lot is that it's a fundamental flaw of the tech that is extremely difficult to fix, and to be honest most people who are content with the Surface pen are probably sick of hearing about it.

I also read that some Cintiqs and Intuos tablets had the issue a little while back until Wacom released a driver fix. It also affects the Wacom Cintiq competitors like Huion and XP Pen, although I think Huion just recently released a firmware fix that addresses the issue. This issue also affects other digitizers like Wacom's AES (which is used by Lenovo, HP, and others), basically any active digitizer that needs batteries for its stylus, with Apple's Pencil being the exception.

What's crazy is that the August 2018 update which fixed the issue still exhibits the wavy lines:Īpparently that was an improvement. Gloves, plugging in the charger, changing the ambient lighting, drawing at a perpendicular angle, all have no positive effect. I've installed the latest updates from MS and there was zero improvement. The Surface, which uses N-trig's tech that MS acquired in 2015, exhibits sine-wavy lines when I draw slowly at an angle. The latter two use Wacom's battery-less EMR tech and have no jitter issues.

I own the Surface Pro 2017, the Samsung Galaxy Book 12, and the HP Zbook x2 G4. I just wanna ink on my computer and use software I like :( I’ve had a lot of problems in the past with the Surface, but when I upgraded to the 2017, all of them went away - except the Pen. I would prefer PC, but I’m starting to think an iPad is the future for me. I guess this is why Apple does so much marketing that Macs/iPads are tools for creators, artists, and musicians, their hardware does really well with it, and the software is usually user-friendly and streamlined. The issue does exist, and Microsoft can do much better than ‘usable’ products. I’ve checked the pen, the computer, and everything possible to the point where I can confidently say it’s not hardware defects. I’d wager they’re not artists or don’t do work that requires a non-jittery pen and instead use the pen for taking notes on the rare occasion or to tap buttons in CIV V. What annoys me is that I’ve seen people posting stuff like “it’s clearly just you and your defective pen or shaky hand, this issue doesn’t exist” all over Reddit. Thanks for the good post, I agree with your points. Probably has to do with the everlasting grounding issues on the surface line. The surface pen has single-handedly killed the surface experience for me, and if I could return it, I wouldn't even hesitate.Įdit: Using artist gloves makes the jitter appear MUCH more frequently than not using it. For me, using this thing with one note is a daily frustration. It's workable with heavy stroke smoothing or just drawing at a fast pace. This pen is "usable" in art programs and this is why you don't see people complaining a lot. All Wacom EMR, AES, and the apple pencil are just exponentially better than the MPP that Microsoft uses.

Just look at the S-Pen on the Galaxy book series, or even the android galaxy tab series, it's leaps and bounds, and leaps and bounds better than this pen. And since the older pen does not support tilt, using it at any comfortable writing angle produces an extreme offset that is basically an eyesore. Diagonal lines with the older pen are a shit show of Microsoft's incompetence. The older pen does not have this "extreme jitter" problem where the line jumps around, but it has its own set of massive issues. I guarantee you'll get these lines in certain spots on your display on any model with the new surface pen. To reproduce this, select either 0.25 or 0.5 pen brush in one note and draw horizontal or vertical lines at 1 cm/s or so. This is 100% reproducible on EVERY SINGLE surface in existence that I've come across. There are bands on the screen where you can easily see extreme jitter. They exist on all surfaces I've tried, in stores, my friend's and even on different models. I know for a fact that the jitter problems you're suffering from are not isolated.
I regret buying my SP6 just because of this thing.
